BRING YOUR CLASS TO AMoA TODAY
How do you learn from looking at art?
AMoA is applying an innovative arts-based curriculum and teaching method called Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) which uses art to develop critical thinking, communication, and visual literacy skills.
Through learning-centered discussions of visual art, the participants will engage in a rigorous process of examination and evaluation. Studies have found that
VTS builds critical thinking skills that students transfer to other settings and other subjects, including writing, math, social studies, and science.
Students will be encouraged to formulate thoughtful responses based on their observations.
Of course, you can always schedule an art making activity in conjunction with your discussion of art while at the Museum.
AMoA is offering companion curricula written for the exhibitions free to classroom teachers. This way they can teach students about the exhibit prior to their visit to the Museum. These lessons will also help to fulfill the BESE board requirements for art education.
“Meet Me at the Museum”
“Meet Me at the Museum” is a program in which those suffering from the effects of Alzheimer's or dementia and their care givers will participate in art viewing and making. NYU conducted a study of a similar program at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The study found that many participants showed a positive change in mood after tours. Some even reported an increased desire to socialize afterwards. We hope to provide a warm, safe, and inviting environment where people affected by dementia and Alzheimer's can come and experience art in a way that is both emotionally rewarding and intellectually stimulating.
